The designer torn from the Red Bull: “The victories? The secret is to be creative. I come from a family of artists. In Red Bull we had a fantastic group, but also one of the worst galleries of the wind …”

“In Formula Uno there is more and more technology, but people really count.” Word of Adrian Newey, Stratford-Upon-Avon designer, the city of Shakespeare, and from March engaged in a company: to raise Aston Martin. Having English in the team means anticipating, going further and Lawrence Stroll knows it well, willing to put on the plate a huge figure (over $ 30 million a year) in order to ensure it. Last summer the Canadian billionaire beat Ferrari’s competition, very close to taking it, convinced that even at Silverstone the genius will continue to do that he has been doing well for forty years now: winning.

Newey’s secrets

Yes, because in a formula one, where around a single -seater about a thousand people operate, it is difficult to think that a single can still be so decisive. Yet with Newey it is different. “The secret is to be creative – he explains – I come from a family of artists and drawing since I was a child. Then at ten I decided that I would have done the designer. I probably didn’t even know what it meant but since then my goal is to use my creativity at the service of speed, this is the aspect that fascinates me most”. The tools, however, are those of all time: “I have never stopped using my work table. For me it is like speaking, once you learn you no longer forget it and I grew up drawing. I could use the computer, of course, but I would only be slower and I need to have the entire project in front of me. On the track I write down ideas and ideas on my notebook and then I try to translate them into a factory design, incomprehensible, to the point that sometimes I don’t even understand what I wrote. “

The Aston Plan

Today Aston Martin sails on sight. The English team collected only 14 points and Alonso – still dry of world championship placements – suffers a terribly complicated Amr25 waiting for Newey. But for the hand of the genius Fernando he will have to wait again: “I had some conversation with the group that deals with the current single -seater – explains the Englishman – my attention is however turned to 2026. I think it is the first time that the regulations relating to the frame and engine change together, an interesting appearance but that scare me a little …”. In short, to change the route it takes bold choices: “I will not be a cheerleader or one of those American football coaches, but this does not mean that it cannot make important decisions when needed – clarifies Newey – at certain times you also have to know how to tell an engineer: you are following the wrong direction. Stop.”

regret

Who knows if they regret it in Red Bull, where they continue to minimize reiterating that the team is worth more than the single. “It’s true, we had a fantastic group – confirms the genius – but also one of the worst wind galleries …”. A problem that will not have to ask Aston Martin, where he will have the latest generation structures. “Lawrence Stroll did an incredible job by building Silverstone’s headquarters. It is the best of all F1.” Important, yes, but not enough: “I believe much more in people than in the tools. I want to help this team grow and if we know how to work well the results will come. But we will not have to dream with open eyes: we will have to be realistic and build our future with patience”. And to think that there were those who were ready to bet that he had lost motivation: “I love this sport. I love work. I love the idea of solving complex problems together. This is what I really motivate every day.”
