Fans and relatives missed martial artist Geronimo Dos Santos for days. Now there is sad certainty.
Former MMA fighter Geronimo Dos Santos has died in the Amazon region at the age of 45. According to Brazilian media, the ex-athlete was swept away by a current in the Rio Negro and was initially considered missing.
Dos Santos was swimming in the river with his girlfriend on Saturday when he was caught by the current. Relatives and rescue workers launched a large-scale search. His brother Feliciano Borges Neto wrote on social media: “Today a tragedy occurred in my life. My dear brother Gerônimo Mondragon went swimming on the beach of Rio Negro and is missing.”
On Monday, the former fighter’s body was discovered under rocks at the bottom of the river. The authorities assume an accident.
Dos Santos signed with the UFC in 2012 but never fought there. In April he won his last fight in Dubai against Aleksei Oleinik by knockout after 109 seconds.
