Around seven months after his departure, former Italian international Giuseppe Rossi is returning to Italian second division club SPAL. The striker, who played for Parma, Manchester United and Villarreal, among others, signed a contract until the end of the season on Friday evening and will wear the number 49 in the future.

With 24 points from 24 games, SPAL is currently in a relegation zone in Serie B. Head coach Daniele De Rossi was released during the week, with Massimo Oddo another world champion from 2006 taking over the vacant post. 36-year-old forward Rossi had a brief spell at SPAL between November 2021 and June 2022 and scored three goals in 14 games. The top scorer at the 2008 Olympic Games has been without a club since the summer of 2022. Unlike in Germany, Italian clubs are still allowed to sign players without a club.
