Ex-Inter colleague cries on TV for Andreas Brehme

The sudden death of Andreas Brehme also caused great consternation in Italy. When ex-teammate Giuseppe Bergomi talks about Brehme on TV, he can no longer hold back his tears.

The unexpected death of world champion Andreas Brehme also caused great sadness in Italian football. For four years, from 1988 to 1992, Brehme played in the Inter Milan jersey. There he left a big mark, collected titles, was a favorite of the Tifosi and was the only German player to date to be voted Footballer of the Year in Italy in 1989.

Back then, Brehme played alongside captain and Inter legend Giuseppe Bergomi. Together they won the Scudetto in 1989 and the UEFA Cup in 1991.

The two remained in close contact even after their time together at the “Nerazzurri”. Until the end. That’s why the sudden death of his friend and former team-mate is particularly affecting the Inter legend.

Bergomi: “Above all, an extraordinary person”

In a video interview with the TV channel Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi speaks emotionally about Brehme: “I had a special relationship with him, we spoke to each other at least twice a month,” said the former defender.

The 60-year-old continued: “I spoke to Zenga (former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga, d. Red.) who heard from him ten days ago. The last time I heard from him was 20 days ago. He told me that he was going to the games against Salernitana (last Friday) and Atletico (this Tuesday, d. Red.) would come.”

Bergomi not only raved about the player Brehme, but also about the person: “He was a real comrade, a friend, we spoke to each other often. A unique player, but above all he was an extraordinary person.”

As he spoke at the end of the interview, Bergomi could no longer contain his emotions and burst into tears: “We will miss you so much, Andy.”

According to his girlfriend Susanne Schaefer, Brehme died of a cardiac arrest on Tuesday night at the age of just 63.
