For his final season as a professional, Mats Hummels moved to AS Roma. But it could also have gone to another top address.

A move to the top French club was apparently within reach: Mats Hummels confirmed that he was close to a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain last year.

The former national player spoke as an expert on Prime Video on the sidelines of the Champions League duel between FC Bayern Munich and PSG. Hummels said there was “interest from both sides.”

However, it was not implemented. According to Hummels, in order for the defender to be able to move to PSG on a free transfer, some personnel in the Parisian squad would have had to change – but that didn’t happen. Instead, the now 36-year-old signed with AS Roma. He ended his career there at the end of last season.

Hummels had previously remembered sport at PSG: in the semi-final second leg of the 2023/24 Champions League season, the central defender scored the decisive goal in Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 away win in Paris. BVB moved into the final against Real Madrid.
