Davy Klaassen sees the red card after a serious foul in the test against Stuttgart. However, the former Bremer player does not leave the pitch.

Curious scene during the test match between VfB Stuttgart and Ajax Amsterdam: Ajax professional Davy Klaassen was initially shown a red card for a foul on Stuttgart’s Atakan Karazor in the 56th minute, but the former Werder Bremen player was then allowed to continue playing. The Stuttgart captain was replaced in the meantime, but at least at first glance he didn’t appear to be seriously injured.

Klaassen had hit Karazor in the lower ankle. Shortly afterwards, a pack formed on the pitch, and VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß also stormed onto the pitch. However, he tried to calm the situation. Referee Christian Ballweg showed Klaassen red. Because both coaches had agreed to continue the game with eleven against eleven, Klaassen was allowed to continue playing.

The Bundesliga club took a 2-0 lead against the Dutch record champions thanks to goals from national players Angelo Stiller (13th minute) and Chris Führich (19th). In the second half, VfB defender Jeff Chabot scored an own goal (52′) before Chuba Akpom (86′) scored the late equalizer. The teams tied 2-2.

National striker Deniz Undav, who was injured for several weeks before the turn of the year and is now training again, was rested. Stuttgart will play their first league game of the new year on January 12th at FC Augsburg. The runner-up is currently in tenth place in the table.

Sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth reported on the sidelines of the test match of “good discussions” with midfielder Stiller, whose contract, which runs until 2027, VfB would like to extend early. But this could still take a certain amount of time, explained Wohlgemuth on Sky. Stiller is one of Stuttgart’s most important players, “an absolute cornerstone”.
