Almost two years after his cardiac arrest on the lawn, the former Bundesliga striker Bas Dost announced his end of his career. The attempt to return to the square was not successful. “You are startled to death when you hear that you had a cardiac arrest. You don’t want to stop football.Algemeen Dagblad“.

At the end of October 2023, Dost, who ran 18 times for the Dutch national team, was collapsed in the service of Nec Nijmegen in the Eredivisie game against AZ Alkmaar (2-1) shortly before the final whistle due to an inflammation of the heart muscle. The attacker was revived on the field of the Afas Stadium and taken to the hospital. Dost stayed there for almost two weeks. A defibrillator was used to intervene in cardiac arrhythmias.

The former Wolfsburg and Frankfurt first sought a comeback in the 2024/25 season, but the inflammation did not heal as expected. Dost was only able to start training again last April, but not for a long time. “Until I received a call from the cardiologist in June.” Something ‘was found during a training session. This moment changed everything. I thought:’ I don’t want that. ‘ You don’t want to play with your life.

Dost came to VfL Wolfsburg in 2012 as an Eredivisie goalkeeping king from SC Heerenveen, with which he won the DFB Cup in 2015. For the wolves, Dost scored 48 goals in 117 missions. Only for Sporting Lisbon he was even more on the pitch from 2016 to 2019, and in 127 games he netted 93 times. In Portugal he became top scorer again in his first season and also a cup winner in 2019. A year earlier, he reached its highest market value with 22 million euros. The step back to the Bundesliga in Frankfurt followed – for Eintracht 15 goals in 43 games.

In early 2021, Dost moved to Belgium to the Club Bruges, where he celebrated two championships. In the summer of 2022 we finally went back to the eredivisia. Overall, the attacker can look back on 555 games at a professional level, in which he reaches 270 goals and 62 templates. Dost is particularly grateful for the rescue workers present at the Afas Stadium at the time. “Without you, I wouldn’t be there anymore. Thank you for saving my life.”
