Tennis professionals can only relax for a short time a year. This also concerns Germany’s ace Eva Lys – she has criticized the calendar.

Eva Lys sees the international tennis calendar as clearly too packed. The top German player talks not only about physical stress, but also about mental stress.

“We have a lot of injuries – and I don’t want to use the word burnout, but we have a lot of people who just can’t do it anymore, who don’t have the mental capacity because it’s just too much,” said the 23-year-old in an interview with Sport1.

Lys is not alone in her criticism. Other professionals had also previously called for the calendar to be straightened out. For Lys it is clear: “The tour is far too long.” In other sports there is an offseason “in which nothing happens.” In tennis, however, this is “much too short”. Vacation is only possible for “two weeks,” according to the current number 40 in the world.

Lys also expressed criticism of the external representation of women’s tennis. Compared to the men’s tour, she sees clear deficits – especially in social media. “I think the way tennis does TV is great and that’s completely missing in women’s tennis,” explained Lys. There are also “unbelievable rallies” among the women. The sport is sometimes even “faster because we are very close to the line”. That’s why the rallies are “at least as exciting as for the men.”
