European Championships: Beach volleyball – Ehlers/Wickler in the round of 16 – out for women’s duos

The beach volleyball players Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler were the first German men’s team to reach the round of 16 at the European Championship. For two German women’s duos, however, the tournament is over.

The beach volleyball players Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler fought their way into the round of 16 of the European Championship. On the clay court on Munich’s Königsplatz, Hamburg defeated the Austrians Christoph Dressler/Alexander Huber with 21:17, 19:21, 15:12.

Especially the experienced winder, who finished second in the 2019 World Cup, led the Germans to the next round. The Swiss Marco Krattiger/Florian Breer are waiting there on Friday. So far only the two German women’s teams Borger/Sude and Laboureur/Schulz have reached the round of the last 16.

New duo Walkenhorst/Lippmann fails

For two other German women’s combinations, however, the European Championships, which are held as part of the European Championships, came to an end. Kira Walkenhorst and Louisa Lippmann were eliminated on Thursday. The new duo lost to the Swiss Esmee Böbner/Zoe Verge-Depre 0:2 (19:21, 20:22).

Rio Olympic champion Walkenhorst played her first international tournament in Munich after her career ended in 2019 thanks to a wild card. It was the first Beach European Championship for her partner Lippmann. The former national indoor player wants to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with Laura Ludwig.

German duel burst: Tillmann / Müller surprisingly out

The World Cup third-placed Cinja Tillmann/Svenja Müller had started furiously against the Italians Margherita Bianchin/Claudia Scampoli, 21:12 in the first set. The duo then lost the second almost 19:21. In the decisive third set, Tillmann/Müller lost 15:17. This burst a possible German round of 16 duel against Karla Borger and Julia Sude.
