Captain Christian Günter is looking forward to a heated atmosphere ahead of his SC Freiburg’s Europa League game against Olympiacos Piraeus. Christian Streich does not expect fan riots.

After last week’s hard-fought 2-1 Europa League matchday one win, SC Freiburg will play against the Greek representative Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday evening. With another success, the Breisgauer would like to take an important step towards surviving the group phase.

“I already have one or the other Match of Olympiacos Piraeus in the Champions League seen,” said Christian Günter at the obligatory press conference before the game: “You could always see that the mood was extremely good, extremely heated. It’s fun for us to play in such an atmosphere,” says the German international, looking forward to the second Europa League game of the season. “The mood is impressive,” he admits full of anticipation. They don’t want to hide themselves. Head coach Christian Streich agrees.

“We are not afraid” – Christian Streich

“Piraeus had the chance to reach the Champions League in qualifying. But we had that too on the last day of the Bundesliga,” Streich said. Of course, Olympiakos have many well-known players, “but our team also has many players who have a lot of experience in the Bundesliga. It’s not an easy league either,” the 57-year-old sums up. Of course they have a lot of respect for Olympiakos, “but we’re not afraid. We’ll arrive here with a lot of self-confidence and we’re really looking forward to playing football in the Europa League tomorrow night.”

Streich doesn’t expect any riots

Streich does not believe that there will be riots on the fringes of the game, such as the recent appearances of Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FC Köln in the European Cup. Even if the Piraeus fans have always been negative in the past. “Our fans are known for being peaceful,” there is also a “Greek-German friendship that you can experience when you meet. Why should there be problems between people?”

Sallai and Höler not there

SC Freiburg is expecting a total of 750 fans who have traveled with them to the stadium. He won’t be there long-term injured Lucas Hölersuch as Offensive man Roland Sallaiwho needed surgery after an eye injury.
