EURO 2024
The German national team will face Hungary, Scotland and Switzerland in the group stage of EURO 2024. This was the result of the draw in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie on Saturday evening. The DFB selection opens the tournament in Munich against the Scots and goes into Group A as favorites.
The Scots will be the opening opponents of national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s DFB selection in the Munich Arena on June 14th, who was unable to travel by plane to the draw in the north due to the onset of winter in the south.
The national team will play against Hungary on June 19th in Stuttgart, and the German finale of the group phase will be against the Swiss on June 23rd in Frankfurt/Main. The goal of all teams is the final in the Berlin Olympic Stadium on July 14th. Gianluigi Buffon, Steve McManaman, Angelos Charisteas, Brian Laudrup, Tomas Rosicky, Ricardo Quaresma, Blaise Matuidi, Wesley Sneijder, Sami Khedira and David Silva acted as lottery fairies.
Nagelsmann’s selection is again in a low mood after the disappointing November games against Turkey (2:3) and in Vienna against Austria (0:2). The preparations for the European Championship will not continue until March, with test matches against the Netherlands and France. “The truth will come in the summer,” said DFB sports director Rudi Völler on Friday.

Nagelsmann had major problems getting there because of the heavy snowfall; all flights at Munich airport were canceled. So the 36-year-old got into the car in the morning and made it to Hamburg on time. However, his assistant coaches Benjamin Glück and Sandro Wagner did not travel. Völler and association president Bernd Neuendorf had already arrived in Hamburg before Saturday as important representatives of the European Championship hosts.
Playoffs for EURO 2024: Which teams still have a chance of getting a ticket to the European Championship?
Twelve nations will fight for the three open starting places in the playoffs in March 2024. There are no more arithmetic games and “if-then constellations”; instead, the game is only played in a knockout system. In Path A Poland, Wales and Estonia are certainly represented, the fourth team still has to be determined by drawing lots.
In Path B Israel and Bosnia-Herzegovina definitely play. The Path C is already complete and includes Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan and Luxembourg. All playoff participants will be determined in spring 2024 depending on the results in the Nations League and will then play in three semi-finals (March 21) and three finals (March 24) for participation in the UEFA EURO 2024.
In which mode will EURO 2024 be played in Germany?
The EURO 2024 tournament will be played in the same format as EURO 2020. From the six preliminary round groups, the top two group winners and the four best third-placed teams will qualify for the round of 16. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals will then be played in a knockout system. The EURO 2024 final will take place on July 14, 2024 in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
331 million euros in prize money at EURO 2024
Winning the final at the 2024 European Championship in Germany alone is worth 8 million euros. The Executive Committee of the European Football Union UEFA approved the bonus payments for next summer’s tournament on Saturday before the draw. In total, the association is paying out 331 million euros – as much as at the last Corona European Championship in 2021.
All 24 European Championship participants receive a starting bonus of 9.25 million euros, and there is 1.5 million euros for qualifying for the round of 16. Whoever reaches the quarter-finals will receive an additional 2.5 million euros. 4 million euros go to the semi-finalists, 5 million euros to the losing finalist. Each group game won brings an additional 1 million euros, each draw 500,000 euros. In the best case scenario, the European champion will receive a total of 28.25 million euros in UEFA bonuses.
It is not yet known which bonuses the German Football Association will pay out to the national team. The German players at the 2021 European Championship would each have received prize money of 400,000 euros if they won the title. The selection of the then national coach Joachim Löw came to an end in the round of 16.
