EU condemns new coup in Burkina Faso

The European Union has condemned the new coup in Burkina Faso, West Africa. The EU is calling for “return to constitutional order,” said Josep Borrell, the union’s foreign affairs coordinator.

Soldiers have occupied traffic interchanges in the capital Ouagadougou and shots are still heard. On Friday, soldiers overthrew junta leader Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. He came to power in a coup earlier this year. The country of approximately 22 million inhabitants is about 6.5 times larger than the Netherlands and became independent from France in 1958 under the name Upper Volta. The country has since known at least nine coups, the last two this year.
