EU BuitenlandChef Kaja Kallas Together with the Canadian representative on Monday, the agreement signed after an EU-Canada summit in Brussels. “In a time of increasing tensions it will deepen our defense ties and make new forms of cooperation possible,” said Kallas on X.

The partnership, called SecuritY Action for Europe Safe), is a requirement for countries outside the EU to be able to claim the 150 billion euros that the European Commission will borrow to Member States for the purchase of weapons. To be able to claim this, Canada must collaborate with another EU Member State.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the partnership a “historical step to deepen the relationship between Canada and the European Union”. In a press conference afterwards, he emphasized the importance of working with the EU “in a rapidly changing world” in which a “new world order” is developing.

The EU previously entered the same partnership with the United Kingdom and conversations are also being held with Australia.
