Eriksen on his way back to Brentford: ‘Two days after cardiac arrest I already knew I wanted to play football again’ | Foreign football

June 12, 2021 in the Parken-Stadion. During the match between Denmark and Finland, Christian Eriksen suddenly falls to the pitch. The whole world is holding its breath – it won’t anyway… To everyone’s relief, Eriksen is already showing signs of life on the stretcher that carries him off the field. In the ambulance Eriksen says to fiancé Sabrina: ,,I will never play football again. no way.

Almost eight months later, Christian Eriksen is a footballer again. With the help of a defibrillator, a device that has to get his heart to beat again when it comes to a stop. It meant that Eriksen could no longer stay at Inter – in Italy a defibrillator is banned in contact sports – but Premier League club Brentford offered a way out. “Two days after my cardiac arrest I already knew that I wanted to play football again,” Eriksen says in the first interview on the club channels† “Of course I said no at the time.”

“Later that evening and the following days I started to realize what had happened to me,” the Dane continues. “Under the guidance of doctors, who had to get me ready to start playing football again. Meanwhile, they tested how my heart reacted to physical training. Fortunately, all the results were good. It was a great feeling to hear that I could do everything without limits.”

And so Eriksen can fully focus on his career, which is all but over at the age of 29. It will be interesting to see if he returns to his best level. He is already dreaming: Eriksen would like to be there next winter at the World Cup in Qatar. No one who doesn’t give it to him.
