The future of Xabi Alonso in Leverkusen is still unclear. But the club is already looking for a successor – and probably found it.

Around the coaching post at Bayer Leverkusen, the evidence of an early decision is condensed. Xabi Alonso continues to be silent about his future, but something seems to be moving in the background.

According to information from the “kicker”, Leverkusen’s leadership is said to have already committed himself to a successor: Erik Ten Hag. Accordingly, one has already progressed with the Dutch in the talks. There is speculation about an agreement that may already have been achieved. The report also says that the coaching search is “as good as regulated”.

Sky, on the other hand, reports that there were concrete conversations with Ten HAG, but other candidates should still be on the list.

The 55-year-old worked for Bayern Munich II from 2013 to 2015. He made his international breakthrough as a coach of Ajax Amsterdam between 2017 and 2022. Since July 2022, Ten Hag Team manager was at Manchester United. Despite the FA-Cup victory in 2024, things went through sport, and he was released on October 28 of the same year.

Alonso is still under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2026. Nevertheless, a change to the Spanish record champion Real Madrid has been assessed as very likely for months – similar to a farewell to Carlo Ancelotti among the “royal”.
