The troubled Dutch football record champion Ajax Amsterdam has placed coach Maurice Steijn on leave after just seven league games.

With this, the Europa League participant reacted to the recent decline, in the Eredivisie Ajax slipped to second-to-last place after a 3-4 defeat at bottom team FC Utrecht. However, most of the competitors have already played two more games.

The 49-year-old Steijn only took over from John Heitinga at the start of the season and signed a contract until 2026. Recently he had doubts whether Steijn “the right man is still in the right place. Together we came to the conclusion that it was better to separate”said managing director Jan van Halst.

It was only at the end of September that sporting director Sven Mislintat had to resign from Ajax. Hedwiges Maduro is taking over the training for the time being. Ajax disappointed last season when they finished third in the Eredivisie and lost their regular place in the Champions League.
