Erasmus + turns 35, DiscoverEU

Land figures speak for themselves: almost so far 13 million attendees they had the opportunity to learn, work or train abroad. And this happened thanks to Erasmus + (the new name it took in 2014), a genuine European success that celebrates its first 35 years this year.

Erasmus + program, a success that lasts 35 years

Every year over 600 thousand Europeans choose Erasmus + proposals and all after this experience, they say the same thing: “The program has changed our lives”.

And indeed, since its inception in 1987, as he says Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth «the program creates new generations of educated, trained and engaged Europeans, connected across borders. This is really a reason to celebrate 35 years ».

Always in line with changes

Over the years Erasmus + has undergone substantial changes. It has been constantly modernizedexpanded and open to countries that initially were not part of it. This broadening of the geographical and sectoral scope made it possible to carry out more than 615,000 mobility activities in 2021, despite the difficult health situation.

There renaming to Erasmus + in 2014 he wanted to mark the expansion to all sectors of education, youth and sport.

The Erasmus + 2021-2027 edition

The current 2021-2027 edition is characterized by the integration in the program of DiscoverEU which offers young Europeans the opportunity to travel by train across Europe. With this change and thanks to the exceptional funding granted in the context ofEuropean Year of Youth 2022this year will be made available 70,000 travel tickets.

But there is another important factor: all Erasmus + mobility and cooperation projects they support green and digital transitions. And there” inclusion remains a key priority of the program, to enable more people to learn and participate in transnational projects, even to those with fewer opportunities.
