Equestrian sport in Luhmühlen: Eventing riders want to recommend themselves for the World Championships

Status: 06/15/2022 2:14 p.m

From Thursday to Sunday, the German eventing riders are looking for their master in Luhmühlen. In addition to the DM, the international five-star test is increasing. The NDR broadcasts live on TV at the weekend and here on NDR.de.

Top riders from a total of 21 nations have registered for the classic in the Lüneburg Heath, where spectators are allowed again, unlike last year. The focus of the German starters is primarily on the four-star test, which is also about the German championship and the coveted starting places for the 2022 World Championships in September in Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy.

Young and Auffarth at the start

The defending champion and three-time Olympic champion Michael Jung (Horb), who triumphed last year with Chipmunk, is this time with the eleven-year-old highlighter. The former world champion Sandra Auffarth (Ganderkesee) is saddled with Viamant du Matz and Rosveel. Sophie Leube (Fröndenberg) is making her debut in the five-star test with the twelve-year-old mare Jadore Moi.

Not there are Ingrid Klimke (Münster), who will be competing at the same time in Baborowsko, Poland, and Julia Krajewski (Warendorf). The Olympic champion should be set for the World Cup.

Thomsen for the first time as national coach in Luhmühlen

New national coach Peter Thomsen, who knows the tournament well as a spectator and rider, is coming to Luhmühlen for the first time in his new role. “This is my home, my living room. It’s an honor and fun for every eventing rider to start there,” said the two-time team Olympic champion, who took over from Hans Melzer at the beginning of the year.

During his tenure, his riders won 34 medals at Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships (19 gold, 8 silver, 7 bronze). “It’s the challenge I wanted,” said Thomsen: “I hope I can fill in his footsteps as much as possible.”

Talents want to prove themselves

In terms of content, the 61-year-old sees one focus as bringing talent forward: “That’s the big challenge – to make the top broader and of course younger. It’s a long way.” For the talents, the World Cup is not yet an option. You can first prove yourself at the German championships this weekend.
