Ellen Degeneres confirmed that she and her wife Portia de Rossi moved to Great Britain because of Donald Trump. During an event at the Everyman Theater in Cheltenham, England, Degeneres told moderator Richard Bacon that Trump’s election triggered her permanent relocation to the Cotswolds in January.
Life in the country as a contrast to the USA
“We arrived here the day before the election. Watched with a lot of news from friends with crying emojis. And I just thought: ‘He won’,” Degeneres recalled according to BBC. “And we thought: ‘We stay here.'”
She emphasized that life in the country was a positive change compared to the United States. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said the comedian. “We are simply not used to seeing such a beauty. The villages and cities and the architecture. Everything you see is charming, and it’s just a easier life. It’s just clean. Everything is better here – how animals are treated, how politely people are. I just love it here in November. Let horses fly, I have chickens and we had sheep for about two weeks. ”
Degeneres expressed her concern about the situation of the LGBTQ+rights in the United States and noticed that she and de Rossi are considering marrying again in Great Britain.
Worries about LGBTQ+rights and possible second wedding
“The Baptist Church in America tries to undo the same -sex marriage,” she said. “They literally try to prevent them in the future and possibly undo. Portia and I already find out more, and if that happens, we will marry here.”
She added: “I wish we would be at a point where it is not scary. I wished that we lived in a society in which everyone else and their differences accept. As long as we are not there, it is difficult to say that we have made great progress.”
Looking back at the end of the talk show and dealing with the call
Elsewhere in conversation, Degeneres reflected on the end of her talk show “Ellen”, which ended in 2022 after 19 seasons after she was accused of promoting a toxic work environment. As early as 2024, she had spoke on the controversy on her tour and in her latest Netflix stand-up special and commented on Sunday in a similar way.
“No matter what was published – in every article it said: ‘She is common’, and I wondered: How do I deal with it without looking like a victim or as a ‘poor ellen’ or complaining?” She said. “But I wanted to address it. It’s very simple: I am a direct person, and I am very direct, and maybe that means that … I’m mean? … I don’t think I can say anything this [Image] Could ever get rid of or invalidate what hurt me. I hate it. And I hate that people think about me because I know who I am and I know that I am an empathetic, compassionate person. “
She added that it was “certainly an unpleasant way to end the show”. The comedian also confessed that she missed a lot on her show, but she does not believe that a similar format would currently work.
“I wish it would be so because I would do the same here,” she said. “I would love to do that again, but I just believe that people look at their cell phones or no longer really pay attention to the television because we are so flooded with information and entertainment.”
No concrete plans for the future yet
Against this background, she still has no concrete career plans. “I want to have fun, I want to do something,” she said. “I like my chickens, but I’m a bit boring.”
Degeneres is not the only US comedian who left the country after Trump’s second choice. At the beginning of the year, Rosie O’Donnell announced that she moved to Ireland shortly before Donald Trump’s second taking office. Trump reacted with the threat of withdrawing US citizenship.
