On some match days the goals collapse, on others the fans have to leave the stadium without seeing a goal. Like recently in Italy.

There hasn’t been so little offensive action in Italy’s top league for a long time: on the 7th matchday of the current season, only eleven goals were scored in Serie A – fewer than ever since the league was expanded to 20 clubs in the 2004/05 season.

Four matches ended goalless, the most spectacular game was AC Milan’s 2-1 win against AC Florence on Sunday. The league thus undercut the previous negative mark of 13 goals, which was previously achieved on a total of four match days – most recently on the second match day of the 2022/23 season.

For comparison: In the 1968/69 and 1979/80 seasons there was a matchday with only six goals – but at that time there were only 16 teams in the league.

The negative value in the Bundesliga is also eleven goals. In Germany’s top division, this mark was reached twice: on matchday 26 of the 1989/90 season and on matchday 20 of the 1998/99 season. However, the hits were spread over just nine games there, as 18 clubs compete in the Bundesliga.
