The current framework agreement will expire at the beginning of 2027 and the first generation’s voting computers are also due for replacement. A return to pencil and paper is unacceptable for the VVSG, in more than half of the Flemish cities and municipalities have had good experiences with digital votes for years.
“The digital voting system has proven its reliability. It is efficient, transparent and fits in perfectly with the expectations of citizens in modern democracy. It is inexplicable that the federal government could not provide a new system in more than three years. Local authorities do not want to advance,” says Wim Dries, chairman of the VVSG.
