Eisbären Berlin successfully shake off bankruptcy

Defending champions Eisbären Berlin celebrated another success in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) after beating the Bietigheim Steelers.

Three days after the 2:6 at the rear, the champions won 6:4 (3:1, 1:3, 2:0) at the Schwenninger Wild Wings. The Düsseldorfer EG also scored an important 2:0 (1:0, 1:0, 0:0) victory against the Grizzlys Wolfsburg in the fight for the quarter-finals.

After everything initially looked like a clear success for the polar bears, they gave up a 4-1 lead and went into the final third with a draw. Ultimately, Manuel Wiederer (50th) and Frank Mauer (54th) decided the game for Berlin.

DEG was stable on the defensive against Wolfsburg, Jakub Borzecki (7th) and Cedric Schiemenz (23rd) scored the Düsseldorf goals. The Rhinelanders secured fourth place and have a good chance of reaching the quarter-finals directly.

Nine-time title holders Berlin have been able to increase their cushion on the relegation zone in what has been a disappointing season so far, and the play-offs are still within reach. With seven games remaining, the Berliners (62 points) still have a chance of finishing tenth, which entitles them to play in the round of 16. There is currently promoted Löwen Frankfurt (69).
