The Eisbären Berlin have suffered another setback in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) after four wins. On Friday evening, the capital team lost against the Straubing Tigers 3:4 (2:1, 0:2, 1:0, 0:0, 0:1) after a penalty shootout.

Thanks to goals from Frederik Tiffels, Ty Ronning and Marcel Noebels, the Berliners at least secured a point and defended their lead in the table.

In front of 13,823 spectators in the Arena at Ostbahnhof, the home team used their first power play to score Tiffels’ lead. The guests then increased the pressure, repeatedly causing problems for the Berlin defense and equalizing through Philip Samuelsson.

With a successful solo effort, Ronning ensured that the capital team went into the first break with a narrow lead.

However, it only lasted 52 seconds after the restart before Matt Bradley equalized again for Straubing. Shortly afterwards, Tim Brunnhuber even scored to give Lower Bavaria the lead for the first time.

The Berliners now took the initiative again, but were unsuccessful for a long time in the end. It was only ten seconds before the end of regular time that Noebels was able to overcome the strong Straubing keeper Hunter Miska in his 500th DEL game and force extra time.

Overtime remained goalless, and in the penalty shootout Brunnhuber made the decision in favor of the guests.
