Almost 70 years ago, Eintracht Frankfurt celebrated a German championship. Dieter Lindner was also there. Now the former “eagle bearer” is dead.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s champion player Dieter Lindner has died at the age of 85. The Bundesliga soccer team announced this in the evening, citing Lindner’s family. “The Eintracht family mourns the loss of a great sportsman and a wonderful person who repeatedly took on responsibility, especially in times of crisis,” said board spokesman Axel Hellmann.
Due to a serious illness, Lindner has not been able to attend Eintracht games in the stadium in recent years.
At the age of 20, Lindner won the championship title in Berlin in 1959 and a year later his team was in the final of the National Champions Cup (now the Champions League) against Real Madrid (3:7).
During the relegation battle in 1970, Lindner, who had already ended his career, was reactivated for a comeback. In total, Lindner played 435 competitive games for Eintracht, in which he scored 77 goals. He played 189 times in the Bundesliga.
