The police have arrested eight men at a holiday park in Drenthe who are suspected of bank help desk fraud. According to the police, they pretended to be an employee of a bank and in this way defrauded an 84-year-old man from Apeldoorn. The man lost 70,000 euros as a result of the scam.
The victim was approached by an ’employee’ of a bank, police said. After a long telephone conversation and the installation of a program through which the fraudster could look into the victim’s computer, the fraudster managed to siphon away tens of thousands of euros.
The men between the ages of 16 and 23 come from the province of Groningen and Drenthe and are currently in prison. During the search of the holiday home, laptops, 20 telephones, SIM cards and two weapons were seized. It is being investigated whether these are real firearms.
