The first edition of the Egmond Half Marathon was held on March 11, 1973. At the time, the run was one of the first events to be held over such a distance. Nevertheless, the number of participants at 1,100 was enormous for that time. The first winner for the men was Joop Smit, for the women it was Plonie Scheringa.
