“Eddington” is director Ari Aster’s fifth feature film. The thriller was released in cinemas in 2025 and brings back dark memories of pandemic times. Aster deals with the real-life horror of the corona pandemic with black humor and western aesthetics. Now “Eddington” is also available on DVD and Blu-ray with exclusive bonus material: a featurette and some interviews. We’re giving away a DVD and two Blu-rays of Aster’s work.
Mask disputes and power games in the small town
A fictional small town in New Mexico, 2020: Covid-19 causes tension between the residents in Eddington: While Mayor Ted Garcia imposes a mask requirement, Sheriff Joe Cross consistently rejects it. The fronts harden as Garcia campaigns for re-election – until Cross spontaneously decides to run himself. When a murder occurs in Eddington, the violence in the small town escalates.
The real horror, the reality
With “Eddington”, Aster creates a film that reawakens the year 2020 as if from a nightmare: It shows in a drastic way how the corona pandemic causes division and chaos, includes the Black Lives Matter movement and deals with the omnipresence of social media – everything that happens in Eddington is filmed, posted and documented. The horror of the film lies in its realism. Ari Aster is already known for this style: the director also created psychological horror on the screen with Midsommar and The Drama. Aster creates scary moments without any darkness or supernatural elements. In the end, the horror of his films is rooted in reality.
The small town of Eddington is home to a brilliant star cast: Pedro Pascal (“Gladiator 2”) and Joaquin Phoenix (“The Joker”) stage the political clash between Garcia and Cross. The central supporting roles also include well-known names such as Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) and Austin Butler (“Elvis”).
