Young Woman Discovers Disturbing Secrets During Renovation of Inherited House
New York (USA) – The joy of inheriting her grandmother’s house quickly turned sour for a young New Yorker when she encountered a foul odor during the renovation of the century-old property. Determined to uncover the source of the stench, she crawled into the basement, only to make a shocking discovery.
Unearthing a Hidden Horror
After her grandmother passed away two years ago, Gia and her sister unexpectedly became homeowners. “It’s a beautiful house, and we’re lucky to own property in 2026,” Gia shared. However, they quickly realized that moving in was not an option without significant renovations first.
The century-old home required extensive repairs, with unexpected discoveries awaiting the sisters at every turn. “We knew there was work to be done, but once we opened the walls, we encountered much more than we anticipated. There’s still a long road ahead,” Gia commented.
While addressing issues with the gas and electricity, Gia detected a strange odor emanating from the porch. “At first, I thought the smell from the basement was just stuck in my nose, but it kept getting worse,” she recalled.
Describing the Disturbing Odor

Through a process of elimination, Gia determined that the odor must be coming from a crawl space beneath the porch, which had not been accessed for at least 20 years and had been used solely as a storage area.
“When we inherited the house, it was infested with fleas, and many neighborhood cats sought shelter in that space,” Gia explained. Upon peeking into the crawl space, she was met with lifeless eyes. But instead of a skull, it was “leathery, mummified skin”—she had found the remains of a raccoon.
An Unsettling Cleaning Mission
After a sleepless night, she decided to search the crawl space for more remains. Clad in protective gear, Gia crawled into the tiny area, documenting her cleaning efforts on TikTok. She encountered not just the skull of an opossum, but also a bird, chicken bones, and even a mummified cat.
After several grueling hours, the crawl space was cleared, and the repugnant odor finally vanished.
A Hopeful Outlook
Despite the likelihood of more issues arising within the century-old home, Gia remains optimistic about the future. “Now, at least, I don’t have to hold my nose anymore,” she concluded.
