Ed Sheeran becomes the first artist to break the 100 million followers mark on Spotify

Singer Ed Sheeran sets a new record: he is the first artist in Spotify history to have 100 million followers. To celebrate this top result, Spotify gave the singer a t-shirt.

Sheeran posted a video on Twitter today (July 27) of himself showing off Spotify’s white t-shirt, which has the large writing “ASK ME ABOUT MY 100 MILLION SPOTIFY FOLLOWERS.” Sheeran is also seen amusingly approaching the bored venue staff before a concert on his current stadium tour to get their attention for the t-shirt. The only one happy about his t-shirt in the video is British singer Maisie Peters, Sheeran’s current opening act. She hugs him and says, “Well done Ed Sheeran!”

Sheeran is now the most followed artist with his new streaming record ahead of Ariana Grande (81.64 million), Billie Eilish (66.18 million), Drake (65.40 million) and Justin Bieber (63.49 million). on Spotify. He was also the first artist to reach 50 million followers on Spotify in March 2020 – making him the most-streamed artist on the platform overall, with an average monthly listener of 81.20 million.

Even before his most recent success, he landed in the British charts with two singles this year. His own single “Bad Habits” is at number four and his collaboration with Fireboy DML “Peru” is at number two. He also recently made a surprise guest appearance with Snow Patrol at the Latitude Festival, singing a cover version of “Bad Habits” with the band as well as their own song “Just Say Yes”.
