Economy grows slightly in summer

The Italian economy grew slightly in the summer. The gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0.1 percent in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter, as the statistics office Istat announced in Rome on Friday.

A preliminary estimate had shown stagnation. Analysts on average had expected confirmation. The slight growth follows a contraction of 0.4 percent in the second quarter.

Growth in the summer months was supported by private consumption and foreign trade. However, investment expenditure caused a burden. (dpa)
