Dutchman in mortal danger after petanque ball explodes during bachelor party in Ardennes | Abroad

A bachelor party in the Belgian city of Stavelot ended in drama last Saturday. A Dutchman is currently fighting for his life after a petanque ball exploded when it landed in a fire pit.

The incident happened close to the Spa-Francorchamps race circuit. A group of fourteen Dutch people stayed there to celebrate a bachelor party. It went wrong around 9:30 pm. The holidaymakers sat around a fire pit, with petanque balls underneath. They would have become hot from the heat and one of them exploded.

“It had a grenade effect,” the Stavelot-Malmedy police reported to the local newspapers. “When the ball exploded, some flinging pieces ended up in the back of someone’s skull.” The man was rushed to hospital where he is currently fighting to survive.

A few years ago, a man in France was killed after a petanque ball ended up in a family barbecue and exploded. Metal particles got into the head of the 31-year-old man, who eventually died of his injuries.

Petanque, one of the most popular games in France, is a form of pétanque that involves throwing metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball.
