Dutchman casually goes on a luxury holiday with girlfriend while German police are looking for him | Abroad

A 35-year-old Dutchman thought he could go on a luxury holiday with his girlfriend this summer, knowing that he was wanted by the police. In the fashionable Italian city of Sorrento, close to Naples and the volcano Vesuvius, the police made short work of that dream.

The man and his girlfriend stayed in a luxury hotel on Corso Italia, Sorrento’s most famous shopping street, in the heart of the city. He had only just arrived but visibly enjoyed his stay in the city. “They looked like a normal couple,” write Italian media.

While checking into the hotel, the staff found out that they were not dealing with just anyone. A short check showed that the Dutchman was spotted throughout Europe because of his criminal past. In 2017, for example, he would have been guilty of drug-related crimes in Germany, for which he will have to go to prison for another three years.

International arrest warrant

The Italian police were informed and arrived some time later to handcuff the Dutchman. This happened in the presence of his girlfriend, Italian media write. It is expected that the Dutchman will soon be extradited to Germany, where he will have to serve his remaining sentence.

The German judiciary had been looking for the Dutchman since January 2022 and had therefore issued an international arrest warrant. It is not clear whether the Dutchman’s girlfriend is over the head and whether she was aware of her partner’s criminal past.

Popular with holiday makers

Located on the Gulf of Naples, Sorrento is the western gateway to the Amalfi Coast and is popular with holidaymakers from all over the world, thanks in part to its historic architecture and picturesque location. In 2019, the city welcomed about 3 million visitors.
