Armand Duplantis has been dominating the high jump for years. In Tokyo, he crowned himself world champion for the third time – and put a new record again.
Armand Duplantis has exceeded himself again. The pole jumper from Sweden not only crowned the world champion at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, but also set another world record.
At 6.30 meters, Duplantis mastered a height that was considered unreachable a few years ago. In front of 50,000 spectators in the Tokyo nation stadium, the 25-year-old used the stage for a performance, which also earned him $ 170,000 (around 144,000 euros)-of which $ 100,000 (around 85,000 euros) alone. It was already the 14th world record of his career. Most recently, he had improved the worldwide best value in Budapest to 6.29 meters in August.
“Thank you, that was the biggest dream for me,” said Duplantis to the stadium microphone after the competition in Tokyo. “It was great.” He then picked up the winning cap from his fiance Desiré Inglander under the jubilation of the fans.
The Tokyo and Paris Olympic champion had already crossed the latte six times this afternoon, with skipped 6.15 meters already determined as a world champion when he managed to score his new world record. On the 6.30 meters, he initially failed twice, but mastered her in the third attempt. His parents followed the events in the stands.
Emmanouil Karalis secured the silver medal. The Greek stayed 30 centimeters behind Duplantis at 6.00 meters. Like 2023, bronze secured Kurtis Marschall from Australia with 5.95 meters. The German Bo Kanda Lita Baehre showed a solid competition and set its season best with 5.75 meters.
Duplantis, who won in Eugene in 2022 and in 2023 in Budapest World Cup gold, indicated that he considers the 6.40 meters possible. With over a hundred jumps over the six-meter mark, he stays in his own league anyway. His last defeat in a big title fight was a long time ago – recently he was defeated in the Diamond League 2023 in Monaco.
