Pius Paschke started the tour opener in Oberstdorf as number one in the World Cup. And the first jump was really tough.

DSV Adler Pius Paschke narrowly missed the podium at the start of the Four Hills Tournament. The 34-year-old came fourth behind a trio from Austria. Stefan Kraft won ahead of Jan Hörl and Daniel Tschofenig.

In the first round, Paschke was third behind Kraft and Hörl, but Tschofenig flew to 140.5 meters in the second and passed the German.

Paschke’s gap to Stefan Kraft is 13.8 points, to Jan Hörl 10.3 points and to Tschofenig 2.3. Karl Geiger ended up in eighth place, Andreas Wellinger was 20th.

National coach Stefan Horngacher rated Paschke’s performance in Oberstdorf on the ZDF microphone as “absolutely positive”. “He did a great job, I’m happy with the Pius,” he added, but also emphasized that there was still a few meters more possible, especially in the second jump. Paschke himself was also able to live well with his performance. “Today I did really well and was happy with myself,” he said on ZDF.

National coach Horngacher Karl Geiger also confirmed a positive performance: “Especially the second jump: the timing was much better, good pressure, flown very well – it was a great jump from him.” The 55-year-old particularly liked Geiger’s race to catch up. After the first round, Geiger was still 18th, but in the end he made it into the top ten jumpers.

For Andreas Wellinger, both rounds were rather disappointing. National coach Horngacher criticized the timing and position of the Olympic champion. “Unfortunately Andi can’t get on the hill,” he said.

It now continues in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: After the qualification on December 31st, the second competition of the tour traditionally takes place there on New Year’s Day.
