Drunk father crashes into lantern in Treptow – and just keeps drinking

By Dirk Boettger

Incredible scenes on Whit Monday in Berlin-Treptow: A family trip with too much alcohol ended in a crash – and the driver just kept drinking in front of the police and the children!

At around 7.30 p.m., a fully occupied VW Passat left the roadway in a right-hand bend and crashed into a light pole – directly in front of Police Directorate 3 – Crime Control Unit! Two men, a woman and two children escaped from the badly damaged car with Polish license plates.

Even before the police arrived, witnesses observed that a silver-colored Audi A4 was parked a little further away from the scene of the accident. A man in a white polo shirt was then reportedly seen walking to the nearest gas station and buying beer.

Then he opened a beer with his teeth and handed it to the driver of the Passat, who was holding the smaller of the two children in his arms.

A police officer rushed to the man and took the beer from him. He handed it back to the man who put it in his hand.

The driver voluntarily blew a few minutes after the accident and a breath alcohol level of over 1.9 per mille was determined! The driver walked and spoke quite normally at the value.

He was handcuffed – in front of the children – and taken away. The mother burst into tears on the spot, probably realizing the consequences of the accident.

It also emerged that the youngest child was only sitting on the mother’s lap when the accident occurred. A suitable child seat was not found. The whole family refused treatment by rescue workers from the Berlin fire brigade.

The officials meanwhile examined the awkwardly parked Audi. The right side window was half down. There were beer bottles in the passenger compartment, fishing gear and an empty case of beer in the trunk.

The officers asked the man in the white polo shirt where he had come from since he was not in the accident vehicle. The man said he ran. He didn’t want to know the Audi, he would never have driven it. The man remained free.
