Weightlessness is becoming a crucial tool in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases. A miniature laboratory from the British company Mass Balance has been orbiting Earth since July, providing researchers with entirely new insights into the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Microgravity as a Precision Tool
The grapefruit-sized system analyzes the behavior of disordered proteins over several months. The significant advantage is that the effects of protein misfolding can be observed without the distortion caused by gravity. These misfoldings are considered a primary cause of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
The data obtained is directly fed into AI models. The goal is to predict structural changes in proteins and identify new approaches to medication.
Meanwhile, an international crew returned from a 241-day mission in space, during which NASA astronaut Chris Williams and cosmonauts Sergej Kud-Swertschkow and Sergej Mikajew conducted studies related to cancer treatments and manufacturing processes – further evidence of the growing importance of space in pharmaceutical research.
AI Accelerates Protein Research
The integration of artificial intelligence is already yielding concrete results. Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold is utilized by approximately three million researchers globally. Since the tool’s inception, the number of experimentally confirmed protein structures has increased by 40 percent.
The new AI-based early detection system identifies Alzheimer’s up to seven years before the first symptoms manifest, with over 92% accuracy. A simple blood test for p-tau217 can even indicate risk ten years in advance.
Initial patients are already receiving compounds whose development is based on AlphaFold calculations. For instance, the structure of an enzyme for antibiotic resistance was clarified within 30 minutes.
Improving Detection Precision
Researchers at Ruhr University Bochum have achieved a breakthrough in Alzheimer’s diagnostics. Their long-term study involving 779 participants over 17 years shows that the misfolding of the amyloid-β protein in the blood is a precise indicator of subsequent disease onset.
This AI-based model achieves an accuracy of 92%, detecting the disease as much as seven years before the initial symptoms. The findings were published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine. Additionally, in July, the WHO updated its guidelines.
New Treatment Approaches and Political Dimensions
Annual care costs range from €50,000 to €70,000 – an early Alzheimer’s diagnosis could halve these expenses. The upcoming report outlines which AI-supported tests and biomarkers will be available in 2026.
In addition to early detection, stabilizing proteins is coming into focus. A study in Science Advances shows that the SORLA protein slows the accumulation of tau proteins and synapse loss. In Alzheimer’s patients, SORLA concentration is often diminished. In animal trials, increased concentration improved memory performance – a promising therapeutic pathway.
The CSU is now advocating for the establishment of a national medication laboratory in space within the next decade, arguing that weightlessness allows for purer compounds, particularly relevant for oncology. Germany is additionally planning to establish military satellite infrastructure with over 1,000 units to secure technological sovereignty in orbit.
