At Red Bull, a driver change is already setting up after two races. But Verstappen colleague Liam Lawson does not want to clear his place without distributing his possible successor.

Does Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen get a new teammate after two races? According to information from Sky expert Ralf Schumacher, Yuki Tsunoda should take over Liam Lawson’s cockpit at Red Bull from the third season run in Suzuka. This also coincides with several media reports (you can read more about this here).

While the official proclamation is still pending, both drivers are publicly positioned. Tsunoda, who has started for the Red Bull sister team Racing Bulls or its predecessor Alphatauri since 2021, was recently confident. Already at the race in Shanghai, he had emphasized that he felt “100 percent” ready for the challenge alongside Verstappen. With a view to the Red Bull car, the 24-year-old said: “The car is faster, I am sure.” A clear swipe towards Lawson.

Lawson himself, who initially received preference before Tsunoda after the departure of Sergio Pérez at the end of last season, is under pressure after a disappointing start.

In front of the Grand Prix of China, the New Zealander in the British newspaper “The Telegraph” had distributed against Cockpit competitor Tsunoda: “When I look back on our careers, I was his teammate in Formula 3 and beat him,” said Lawson. And further: “In the Euroformula I was his teammate and I beat him there too.”

Lawson further explained that Tsunoda was often promoted while he was left out. “He had his time. Now my time has come,” he said.

But it could be over faster than he would like. Because while teammates Verstappen runs at the front despite technical problems, Lawson continues to wait for his first point in the new season after two races.

It is open whether he still gets the chance to do better. The next race will take place on April 6th in Suzuka – of all places on Tsunoda’s home track.
