What started as an April Fool’s joke eventually became a fact: the ‘Wine Run’ in Den Bosch. 110 people ran enthusiastically through the city and drank wine just as enthusiastically. An ideal activity on Mother’s Day. “I think we’ll cross the finish line dancing.”

Romy Matsen immediately took advantage of the opportunity. She gave her mother a gift to run with. There are several stops along the way where participants can have a drink. “There is of course nothing more fun than drinking wine and running on Mother’s Day,” she said before the run.

‘Plenty of time for wine’
Romy and her mother ran a route of three kilometers. “Then we also have enough time for the wine,” says Romy. Mother Sigrid laughs: “I think we will cross the finish line dancing.”

There was also a six kilometer route for the more avid rider. But: everyone got the same amount of wine. Also a joint warm up could of course not be missed before the starting signal sounded.

“We have provided a lot of water on the route,” says co-organizer Sam van der Sterre of Het Kleinste Wijndoosje from Den Bosch. She also organizes walking routes through Den Bosch with wine and delicacies. But this Mother’s Day the activity was slightly different.

The start was at the Orthenseweg and the finish at the Koningsweg, but it was not a race where times were kept very accurately. “It’s purely for fun. We hope that people have a very pleasant afternoon,” says Sam.

Crawling across the finish line
Moments later, the first riders flowed across the finish line. Some even crawling. “It was a lot of fun, next year,” says one man. The same goes for Jasper, who found running harder than normal. “The wine soothed the aches and pains a little.”

And then Romy and mother Sigrid. They crossed the finish line dancing – especially for Omroep Brabant. Was this the best Mother’s Day yet? “It was a great Mother’s Day gift,” says Sigrid firmly.

She already knows one thing for sure: “If this happens again next year, we will participate with the whole family,” she concludes.
