The province of Drenthe is releasing 750,000 euros for a new support center against intimate terror and femicide. The North Drenthe support center should help to recognize signals earlier and intervene before it is too late. The support center is a three-year trial and the intention is that it will eventually apply throughout the province.
Deputy Yvonne Turenhout (PvdA) announces the initiative at the start of Orange the World, the campaign that draws attention to violence against women and girls. Buildings in Drenthe will also be lit orange in the near future.
Femicide stands for the killing of women, often by (ex) partners. There have also been several examples of femicide in Drenthe in recent years. For example, last year Tonnie from Schoonebeek was stabbed to death by her ex-partner and a 50-year-old woman was murdered in the Marsdijk district in Assen.
