Draw on ZDF: Everything you need to know about the semi-finals of the DFB Cup

The semi-finals of the DFB Cup take place at the beginning of April. The draw can be seen on Saturday (February 10th, 2024) in ZDF’s “aktuelle sportstudio”. It is not yet known who will draw the lots. An overview, including qualified teams and bonuses.

Who has already qualified for the semi-finals?

In the 2023/24 season, the two semi-finals in the DFB Cup will take place on May 2nd/3rd. April. Two second division teams have qualified so far: Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

Düsseldorf beat FC St. Pauli 4:3 (2:2; 1:1) after a penalty shootout on Tuesday (January 30, 2024). Goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier saved two penalties, Christos Tzolis scored and secured the decision.

1. FC Kaiserslautern was the second team to qualify on Wednesday (January 31, 2024). The Palatinate won 3:1 (2:0) at Hertha BSC.

On Tuesday (06.02.24) the first Bundesliga team qualified. Bayer Leverkusen beat VfB Stuttgart 3-2 (0-1) in a thrilling game thanks to a late goal from Jonathan Tah.

In the semi-finals there could be a direct duel between the two second division teams, but they could also meet a first division team. Third division team Saarbrücken can also dream of the semi-finals.

When and where will the final take place?

As usual, the final will take place in Berlin. The day of the final is the last Saturday in May (May 25, 2024).

What can the clubs earn?

A new contract for TV rights has been in effect in the cup since 2022. In the 2022/23 season, the DFB paid out more money to the clubs than ever before. This season the amounts will be slightly exceeded again by the semi-finals. The DFB has not yet announced the exact numbers for the final.

All participating clubs will receive at least 209,247 euros for the 1st main round. Anyone who has survived the first round will receive more than 400,000 euros in the second round, and the amounts per round continue to increase. Whoever makes it to the semi-finals will receive almost 3.5 million euros.

The clubs have to share the money from ticket sales and perimeter advertising after deducting all costs and taxes. Ten percent of this income also goes to the DFB, so each club receives 45 percent of this money.

What else can the clubs achieve?

Even after UEFA’s European Cup reform, which applies from the 2024/25 season, the winner of the DFB Cup has the right to start in the new European league phase League.

Is the DFB Cup winner already over the Bundesliga for them? Champions League or the Europe League qualified, the place goes to the Bundesliga, where it is then distributed according to the final table. The losing finalist of the DFB Cup final cannot benefit under any circumstances.
