German sport can plan for the coming year with the hoped -for increase in financial resources.
In the government draft for the Federal Budget 2026, which Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) presented in Berlin on Wednesday, the sport is estimated with around 359 million euros. In the 2025 budget it was 333 million, in the previous year 282.55 million euros. Compared to the financial plan, expenditure on sports and volunteering is growing by 100 million euros, the increase was also included in the plan by 2029.
Minister Schenderlein: “Sports budget at a new level”
Christiane Schenderlein, responsible Minister of State for Sports and Volunteering in the Federal Chancellery, was satisfied. “With today’s decision, the Federal Government consistently implements the coalition agreement despite the tense budget situation and raises the sports balance to a new level”said the CDU politician. The growth give “Planning security” and do “Investments possible that sport has been waiting for for a long time”.
Money for sports facilities and marginal sports
Important topics are investments in the sports infrastructure (increase of 29.4 million euros), the operation of Olympic support points and training facilities (increase by 10.6 million euros), but also the support of non-Olympic sports (increase by 7.6 million euros). It is now also possible to implement sports policy issues such as German Olympic Advertising, the top sports promotion and the establishment of a Center for Safe Sport, says Schenderlein.
