Douglas returns to profitability

The cosmetics retailer Douglas GmbH was able to set a new sales record in the 2022/23 financial year and get back into the black. This emerges from a statement that the company published on Wednesday.

Adjusted for the effects of strategic branch closures in Spain, group sales reached 4.09 billion euros in the financial year ended at the end of September. This exceeded the previous year’s level by 12.1 percent. The retailer achieved double-digit growth both in stores (+13.0 percent) and in e-commerce (+10.3 percent). On a comparable basis, total revenue increased by 13.4 percent.

The cosmetics retailer is in the black for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic

The Douglas Group also made significant progress in terms of results. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) adjusted for special effects increased by 22.3 percent compared to the previous year and reached 725.9 million euros.

The bottom line was a net profit of 16.7 million euros, after a loss of 313.8 million euros had to be recorded in the 2021/22 financial year. The company emphasized that Douglas had thus reported an annual surplus “for the first time since the pandemic”.

Management is sticking to its medium-term growth targets

CEO Sander van der Laan was pleased with the results. “Our results demonstrate both the strength of our very well-positioned omnichannel business model and our unique offer to customers,” he explained in a statement.

In view of the successful implementation of strategic measures, the CEO reiterated the retailer’s medium-term ambitions. “We are well on the way to continuing our growth path and achieving our goal of five billion euros in sales by 2026,” explained van der Laan.
