The second half had barely begun when Dortmund weakened themselves. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel played a far too risky pass to Bellingham, who fouled Philipp Treu and had to leave the field with a red card. Freiburg’s Günter circled the free kick low to the left of the goal (55th).
BVB coach Kovač reacted, brought on Pascal Groß for Silva and tried to strengthen his defense, which was now of course increasingly challenged. It was a completely different game than in the first half; Freiburg had the majority and had much more control over the ball and pressure. Kobel parried against Treu (69′) and directed a shot from Suzuki onto the crossbar (73′). However, he was powerless when it came to Höler’s remarkable side kick, and the ball flew from the inside post into the net.
Dortmund were even lucky in the final phase when a goal from Freiburg’s Igor Matovič (86th) was disallowed due to an offside position.
