Donetsk plays the European Cup in Krakow

Schalke 04 is still fighting with the consequences of years of mismanagement. The club has to do without a financial injection like in the previous year.
FC Schalke 04 are lost lucrative additional income: Shachtar Donetsk will no longer play his possible home games in the Europa League in the Veltins-Arena. Instead, the Ukrainian club moves to Krakow. This means that FC Schalke 04 misses important income. According to media reports, the second division giant received around two million euros from Donetsk in the previous year so that the Ukrainians could play their home games in the Champions League on Schalke.
A Schalke spokesman said Donetsk informed the club about the decision to play up to upcoming European Cup games in Poland. “In the open and trusting discussions, the reasons for this decision were explained very understandably,” he told the German Press Agency. Above all, the significantly shorter distance to home had played a role. At the same time, the club thanked for the collaboration last season and wished Donetsk “a successful season”.
Because of the ongoing war in Ukraine, Schachtar had played his Champions League home games in Gelsenkirchen last season. At that time, the change was also a financial profit for Schalke.
Schalke 04 urgently has to achieve income in order to reduce negative equity. Otherwise, a deduction of points as a punishment for licensing threatens.
