Discarded Boyata finds new club

Ex-captain Dedryck Boyata is leaving the Bundesliga soccer club Hertha BSC. As the club announced on Monday, the central defender who was last sorted out is moving to his home country of Belgium to champions Club Brugge.

“Dedryck has his merits for Hertha BSC. However, we now want to break new ground. We told him that in an open and respectful conversation,” said Hertha’s sporting director Fredi Bobic: “With the move to Bruges we have a good one for everyone involved Solution found.”

Boyata had already completed the medical check in Bruges on Sunday. The Berliners should receive a transfer fee of two million euros plus possible bonuses for the 31-year-old, whose well-paid contract ran until 2024.

At Hertha Boyata had lost the captain’s armband to Marvin Plattenhardt before the start of the season. Shortly thereafter, after playing in the DFB Cup game at Eintracht Braunschweig (5:6 penalties), he did not make it into the squad for performance reasons. Overall, he has appeared in 76 competitive games (six goals, three assists) for the capital club since moving from Celtic three years ago.
