Author Paula Noronen could not imagine how big a phenomenon her fairy tale character would become.

More than 18 years ago, author Paula Noronen was contacted by the head of Gummerus’ children’s book department from Tiina Kristoffersson. Based on the joint discussions, the creative work began.
In 2007, the first Supermarsu book was published. In a fast-paced adventure, the young girl Emilia drinks from her pet guinea pig’s drinking bottle and turns into Super Guinea Pig, who saves the day with her powers.
Supermarsu books have sold more than 1.2 million copies in all formats so far and it has been nominated twice for the Finlandia Junior award.
The popularity has sometimes surprised the author.
– When I made the first Supermarsu book, I couldn’t even imagine that it could become theater performances or movies, says Noronen.
Success has not come without hard work. The writing work took place at the end of the working day on weekday evenings, weekends and holidays.
– It took quite a few years to write before Supermarsu broke through. A writer doesn’t have working hours, so to speak, but I’ve used a lot of my free time as well.
The story of the super guinea pig has also made it to the big screen. It premieres on Christmas Day The super guinea pig and the big scam -film, which is the third part of the film series.

The children ask
Noronen diligently visits schools and libraries around Finland to talk with children about reading. Encounters with children also give a good perspective on the children’s world.
– Through conversations, I try to find out which issues, for example in friendships, are currently worrying children.
In Supermarsu, environmental issues become one theme. Noronen says that children should not be scared too much. In his opinion, painting threatening pictures of environmental issues does not benefit anyone, but rather the focus should be on finding solutions.
Children are often also interested in another thing.
– I am always asked if it was fun to participate Masked Singer Finland – program, Noronen laughs.
The author is a mother of two teenage children. His own children have taught him that not all things have to happen right away.
– I’m terribly hasty in my personality and everything should be taken care of right away. My children have taught me presence and a calmer attitude.

In Kaukalo
Noronen apologizes for being tired during the interview. He has been playing hockey the night before and hasn’t slept since. The feeling is still euphoric.
– I’ve been playing ice hockey in the women’s amateur team for three years now.
In the past, Noronen was known as an enthusiastic soccer player, but due to knee problems, he had to stop his favorite hobby.
– I saw an ad on Facebook looking for participants for the women’s amateur team. You didn’t need to know anything other than putting on the skates.
The author was encouraged and decided to go along. Currently, Noronen plays as a winger. At first, Noronen was afraid that he would hurt his knee.
– Then I decided that life cannot be lived in fear.
– After every game and training session, I thank you that my knees held up, Noronen laughs.
