The home World Cup for the DHB women starts on Wednesday. The official goal is the semi-finals. But it’s worth aiming for even more.
At the start of the home World Cup, there is an additional incentive for the German handball players: If successful, national coach Markus Gaugisch’s team will receive a record bonus. As the DHB announced on Tuesday, the players will receive 425,000 euros if they win the title – almost as much as the 475,000 euros that were promised to the men’s team before the last World Cup.
Captain Antje Döll welcomed the decision: “We feel valued. After the adjustment of daily allowances at the beginning of the year, this bonus regulation is another strong signal.” At the same time, she emphasized: “The most important thing in the coming weeks is sporting success – we are investing everything we can to make our handball dreams come true at this tournament.” DHB President Andreas Michelmann explained that the association would continue to consistently promote women’s sports.
The World Cup kicks off on Wednesday (from 6 p.m.) in Stuttgart. The opponent is the outsider Iceland. In the preliminary round, the German selection will also face Uruguay (Friday) and Serbia (Sunday, 6 p.m. both times) in Stuttgart. The three best teams in each of the eight groups qualify for the main round. This and a possible quarter-final would be played in Dortmund.
By moving into the main round, 50,000 euros would be secured. Second place would be paid 300,000 euros, third place would be worth 200,000 euros.
