Borussia Mönchengladbach has been playing in Borussia Park since 2004 – now the stadium is being renamed in favor of a sponsor. The club earns a lot of money from this.
The energy service provider “Ista” is taking over the naming rights, as the club confirmed on Tuesday (November 25th, 2025). The stadium will now be called Ista-Borussia-Park. According to media reports, the sponsor pays 4.5 million euros a year for this.
Less sales, investments in the stadium necessary
To put it into perspective: Borussia VfL 1900 Mönchengladbach GmbH recorded sales of 184.8 million euros in 2024, a decrease of 15 million euros. According to the club, this resulted in a deficit of 2.4 million euros.
Borussia owns the stadium. Managing Director Dr. Stefan Stegemann recently pointed out that it will be paid off in 2031. But investments are necessary. “A new floodlight, a new IT system, new turnstiles, new roof foil and corrosion protection will cost us several million. But these expenses are necessary to maintain the beauty of this location.”
Fans protested against the renaming
The active Borussia fan scene protested against the measure, especially on October 25th around the home game against Bayern Munich. “Such a decision cannot possibly be made in the backroom in order to end up confronting the club’s base with a fait accompli. But that is exactly what has happened in the last few months,” it said in a leaflet.
“The fact that such a decision has apparently been made without discussing it with the base is a bigger alarm signal for us than 18th place in the table.” What was called for was a reversal of the deal and the involvement of the fan scene in such decisions. This is “not a point that we will negotiate about”.
