DFB return for Mats Hummels “absolutely special moment”

Experienced people more nervous than expected

For returnee Mats Hummels, the first international match in over two years was “an absolutely special moment”. At the same time, the Dortmund player admitted to the TV station “RTL” after the German national team’s 3-1 win against hosts USA: “I have to say, surprisingly, more nervous than I expected. There was a certain extra tension. It was a lot of fun. The anthem before the game, but also being on the pitch during the game.”

The central defender, who played his last international match in June 2021 in the European Championship exit in the round of 16 against England, impressed with his opening game and header strength. In the second half, after a decent comeback and with a yellow card, he was substituted in the 62nd minute.

After the game, Hummels didn’t want to claim any role as a boss. “If Toni Rüdiger plays there too, I’m definitely not the clear leader. There is already very good coaching together. There are a lot of commands,” said Hummels. “I wouldn’t insist that that’s our formation.” Hummels appeared most often together for Germany with Thomas Müller (69 times), followed by Toni Kroos (63) and Manuel Neuer (55). The BVB professional has appeared alongside Rüdiger 17 times for the DFB so far.
