Defender Dan-Axel Zagadou will no longer be available this year, but can hope for a future at VfB Stuttgart despite his renewed injury. In due course and calmly, the club will sit down with Zagadou and his advisor, said VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß about a possible contract extension. The contract expires next summer.

“Now it’s all about getting healthy for him. It hurts. It’s obviously brutal, especially for Daxo. But you have to think positively,” said the Swabians’ coach.

Because of his serious thigh injury, Zagadou will not only miss the DFB Cup round of 16 on Wednesday at VfL Bochum (6 p.m./live on ARD), but also the other four remaining competitive games of the year. The injury was unrelated to his knee injuries, which had led to Zagadou being forced to take long breaks several times in the past, said Hoeneß.
Luca Jaquez will also not be able to play again until next year due to a muscle injury. It remains to be seen whether the injured Chris Führich (muscular problems) and Tiago Tomás (thigh bruise) will be able to play in Bochum. Goal scorer Deniz Undav, who came off the bench in the 2-1 defeat in Hamburg on SundayHoeneß gave a starting eleven guarantee for the knockout game, as did substitute goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow.
The VfB coach is currently not thinking about successfully defending his title. “I just want to get through one lap now. Then it will be interesting,” said Hoeneß. “We want to survive the winter in this competition. And that is the only goal that there is in Bochum.”
Hoeneß paid great respect to coach Uwe Rösler’s team. Rösler has “built up real momentum” for the relegated team since he took office at the beginning of October, praised the coach: “This is a team with real quality and a very good mix.”
